What is CBD oil? – The Leaf Desk

CBD oil is gaming momentum in the health sector with scientific studies showing it can help with an array of chronic illnesses, pain and anxiety. But what exactly is CBD oil? And why is it so popular?

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD is a popular natural remedy used for many common medical complications. It is one of the 104 chemical compounds found in the well-known plant, cannabis, also referred to as marijuana.

CBD oil has become popular over the last few years because of the benefits it promotes. However, it is important not to get it mixed up with THC, known as Tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is the main compound found in cannabis and is psychoactive, meaning that it causes the sensation of getting ‘high’. Unlike THC, CBD oil is not psychoactive, meaning it does not cause the same feeling.

How does CBD oil work?

This factor makes CBD an attractive option for those who are wanting pain relief without the side effects that marijuana or even certain pharmaceutical drugs can cause. The oil is made by extracting the CBD component from the cannabis plant and then diluting it into an oil such as coconut or hemp seed.

The human body has a system called endocannabinoid (ECS). This system receives signals from all cannabinoids and translates them to affect the body. The body also produces some cannabinoids of its own, called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids and the ECS help the human body regulate certain functions such as sleep, pain and the immune system.

When a person then takes CBD oil, the Cannabidiol influences the body to use its own endocannabinoid system more efficiently and effectively. For example, when CBD enters the body it can stop it from creating a compound that regulates pain, called anandamide. The oil is also able to limit inflammation in the brain, benefiting those who suffer from insomnia and slow immune-system responses.

Is it safe?

Contrary to some beliefs, CBD is legal in the UK because it is not a controlled substance. The NHS now prescribe the cannabis-based medicine to treat illnesses such as epilepsy. However, as with all pharmaceutical products, CBD can have certain side effects.

These side effects may not affect all patients but some side effects include:

  • Tiredness
  • Weight gain/ weight loss
  • Nausea/ changes in appetite
  • Diarrhoea

In addition, if you take CBD, it can affect or make any other medicine less effective. It is always advised to speak to your GP before taking any CBD product to ensure it is safe and appropriate to do so. This is especially important to do if you are taking any other medication or have pre-existing medical conditions.

Takeaway

CBD oil is showing and proving a lot of potentials but it is still vastly unknown and will need more research before it becomes fully adopted. However, it has already shown the many benefits it can provide. CBD oil is promising and gaining the attention of many because of its lack of intoxicating effects. It has also shown it has lower side effects than many other medications. CBD oil treats pain from chronic illnesses, helps epilepsy seizures and reduce anxiety.
