Spotlight: Managing Your Weight With CBD

Smoking cannabis may make you want to eat, but CBD can be an additional tool to help manage your weight with diet and exercise.

The list of health benefits associated with CBD oil always seems to be increasing, and now this non-psychoactive derivative of cannabis is being touted as a useful tool for weight management.

CBD has been subject to rigorous scientific study over recent decades, and the cannabinoid has been found to be crucial to the function of the body’s endocannabinoid system, which, among other things, is responsible for regulating appetite. CBD does not make obvious connections with receptors but has been shown to have significant effects on the CB and CBreceptors in the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabis and appetite

The “munchies” spring to mind immediately when thinking of cannabis and appetite – it’s common to get hungry and thirsty after consuming cannabis, with psychoactive THC playing the starring role.

However, an animal study on CBD has found the cannabinoid to have completely the opposite effect on appetite, with the rats consuming less food in total after being administered CBD treatment.

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry also featured research that showed CBD can help with weight loss by increasing levels of brown fat, which could help to burn calories. CBD does this by activating genes and proteins that facilitate the breakdown of fat, and by inhibiting proteins that create fat cells through a process called lipogenesis.

CBD could be as important as any vitamin and mineral, when considering how it influences the endocannabinoid system. More research is required, but with this system controlling appetite, it’s possible that dysregulation could cause excessive stimulation of appetite, and therefore overeating.

How to use CBD to manage weight:

There is no exact science to using CBD for weight management, and there are several factors for this, such as metabolism speed and just general chemical differences from person to person. Some may find that a small dosage like 10mg helps with weight loss, while others realize they need a much larger dose. Experimentation is the only true way to work out what’s best.

However, starting with a small dose and working upwards is the most sensible way of understanding how your body responds to CBD. Edibles may not be great since you’re trying to lose weight, but CBD vape oil and e-liquid could certainly help.

Final thoughts:

Taking CBD to manage your weight doesn’t reduce the need for exercise and a healthy diet, but it can help to keep your appetite down, so you aren’t constantly tempted to snack.
