South Florida 100: The Democratic presidential debates in Detroit, Trump’s attack on Baltimore and gun control – Sun Sentinel

John “Jack” P. Seiler, former mayor, Fort Lauderdale

Last week: Texas Republican Representative Will Hurd, who has been a frequent critic of the president, announced that he will not seek reelection to Congress. The former CIA agent and moderate Republican was a staunch opponent of the border wall, instead spearheading bipartisan legislation supporting border security focused more on technology, intelligence and strategy than on a wall. As the only black House Republican, Hurd has consistently condemned the president’s rhetoric as out of line, racist, xenophobic, and a deterrent to diversifying the Republican Party. Now, with Hurd’s departure, it may be even harder to diversify the GOP.

Looking ahead: Our Miami Dolphins kickoff the first season under new head coach Brian Flores with a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday night. Despite this clearly being a rebuilding year, there is a lot of excitement, enthusiasm and optimism about the “new look” Dolphins, who are coming off a solid draft and lots of free agent activity in the offseason. With the renovated, upgraded and refurbished Hard Rock Stadium, the Dolphins play at the best venue in football. Hopefully, the team’s performance on the field will be as spectacular as the stadium!
