CBD has gotten a lot of press lately. It is found in the cannabis plant, but unlike THC, it will not make you high. CBD has been showing up in medicinal sounding products, such as tinctures and pain creams, but also in chocolate, olive oil, and sparkling water. (See my previous article on some of the best CBD products).
To help sort out the CBD puzzle, a company called Standard Dose has started testing different products and only sells those that meet its requirements of effectiveness. The online store (a physical store will be opening in New York City later this year) sells products seeking to relieve stress, help with sleep, lessen pain and improve skin. Anthony Saniger, the company’s founder is answering some of the most common CBD questions.
CBD is a cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant that works by nourishing our body‚Äôs endocannabinoid system, ECS. This biological system is responsible for regulating physical and cognitive functions including our stress and anxiety levels, pains and inflammations, memory and sleep patterns. So once we ingest CBD, through oral or transdermal means, it interacts with the cannabinoid receptors in the areas where we’re most deficient – which is why CBD is also considered an adaptogen, because it’s a multi-target remedy that adapts to our body’s needs and deficiencies.
CBD interacts with receptors all over the body and acts as a neutralizing compound, the results are so vast and differ from one individual to the next. So¬†I’ve seen CBD effective in treating inflammation, various skin ailments relating to dryness and redness, muscle and joint pain, stress, sleep deprivation, and even acne.
We require all brands to provide lab test results to ensure product quality and validate claims. We then conduct our own independent third-party lab testing to confirm that the provided information is accurate. The products that are selected after both rounds of testing are then sampled by our internal team that ensures they meet our standards of efficacy and experience.
I’m actually less concerned about the milligrams of CBD and more tuned in to the full picture of the product. A product could be formulated solely with the stalks of the hemp plant and have high amounts of CBD, while another product could have relatively low amounts of CBD, but be formulated alongside complimentary cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant-based adaptogens and therefore be more effective for its intended purpose. Dosage also depends on the type of product; you’d likely want to micro-dose with some food and drink products so you can enjoy more than just a teaspoon in one sitting.
While there are many terrific products on our site, I would recommend Mineral Robyn for Sleep tincture. In addition to CBD, complimentary cannabinoid CBN offers an added sedative component for a more restful sleep. For anxiety, we actually created our own branded product, Standard Dose Tincture. Made with hemp sourced from New York State, the formula adapts to your body’s unique chemistry to help relieve stress and anxiety, reduce pain and inflammation, and elevate to your daily wellness routine. A favorite pain reliever is Dr. Kerklaan’s Natural Pain Cream. This product is made from USA-sourced full spectrum hemp CBD and it may provide fast-acting relief for ailments like lower-back and neck, joint and muscle pain, as well as more chronic conditions such as arthritis, headaches, and nerve pain. Khus + Khus Copious Body Serum is a great product that uses nourishing ingredients like calming lavender, immunity strengthening ashwagandha, and eco-certified CBD oil to create a soothing mind and body experience.
Remember to start slow and stay consistent. A CBD tea once a month likely won’t offer life-changing results after the first cup, but over time we now know that CBD will adapt and respond to the body’s needs.
