Protein Bar & Kitchen puts CBD oil in coffee and shakes – Crain’s Chicago Business

Following the recent trend in CBD oil products, Protein Bar & Kitchen will soon begin offering the hemp plant extract as an add-on to its beverages.

Starting April 15, customers will have the option of adding CBD oil, or cannabidiol, as a “boost” to any shake or coffee for an additional $2.99. After the drink is prepared, 30 milligrams of the oil will be added using a calibrated dropper.

CBD oil is used for ailments including inflammation, pain and anxiety. It doesn’t contain THC, the active chemical in marijuana. Illinois is one of 37 states in which CBD oil is legal.

Research has shown CBD oil has “great promise” and is something that’s appealing to Protein Bar customers, CEO Jeff Drake said in a statement. The FDA has approved a purified form of CBD to treat seizures associated with two rare, severe forms of epilepsy in patients age 2 or older. It is investigating other uses.

Young American, a bar and restaurant in Logan Square, offers CBD shots in drinks.

California-based Medterra will supply Protein Bar’s CBD oil.
