PLAINFIELD — CBD Oil is all the rage these days, offering help with everything from sleeplessness to pain relief.
But it doesn’t work for everyone, and it’s important to do research and talk to knowledgeable people before deciding to try it.
That was the message of a panel of CBD Oil advocates at the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library Tuesday evening.
Meeting with about 50 people, the panel members discussed their personal involvement with the product.
Julie Acra, a pharmacist and owner of Blue River Pharmacy in Brownsburg, said CDB Oil is a supplement, not a “traditional” medicine like aspirin.
“When you have a headache, you take (an aspirin) and expect your headache will go away. That’s not how CBD Oil works. It’s a nutritional supplement, it has to build up in your body before you begin to feel any affects,” Acra said.
CBD is one of many compounds, known as cannabinoids, in the cannabis plant. CBD oils are oils that contain concentrations of CBD. The concentrations and the uses of these oils vary.
Until recently, the best-known compound in cannabis was THC. This is the most active ingredient in marijuana. Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, and these compounds have different effects.
THC creates a mind-altering “high” when a person smokes it or uses it in cooking. This is because THC breaks down when we apply heat and introduce it into the body.
CBD is different. Unlike THC, it is not psychoactive. This means that CBD does not change a person’s state of mind when they use it.
CBD Oil became legal in Indiana in March.
Panelist Diana Settle, a massage therapist, said she suffered from sleep issues for about 10 years, and adding CBD Oil to her regiment seems to have helped.
“It has calmed me. Overall I sleep better. I don’t know if it’s because of the product, but since taking it, my sleep has improved,” Settle said. She now offers the product for sale to her clients.
“Several have reported it’s helped their moods,” she said.
Dr. Kristin Leatherman, a physical therapist, said she works with a lot of people going through different issues, and has found some success with CBD Oil.
“I have a fitness and exercise background, and operate my own business, so I’m always looking to incorporate alternative products into what I do. I got busy and started looking at some of the research and I was blown away by what I was reading,” Leatherman said.
Leatherman estimated 70 percent of her clients who use CBD Oil have had positive results.
“People who have tried multiple products and are at the end of their road, and have been told this is how you’re going to live the rest of your life, (CBD) has made a big improvement for them,” Leatherman said.
All of the panelists agreed that anyone interested in trying CBD Oil should do their own research into the product and talk to professionals before starting.
