Brandon VanPoppelen is ready to educate the masses on the benefits of CBD.
“I felt that, with the federal legalization of hemp in the 2018 farm bill, this was the best way I could bring the medicine to the people on a larger scale,” said Brandon VanPoppelen, a Highland resident who has been a medical marijuana caregiver for about a decade. “
So he connected with Michelle Schwartz, who owns Schwartz’s Delicatessen up the road with her husband, and decided they would open a shop in Highland. That led to Med Roots of Highland opening its doors in late September at 1400 S. Milford Road in the Highland Plaza, which sells a wide array of CBD products.
The shop strictly deals in CBD products, a byproduct of hemp that’s said to assist with certain kinds of aches and pains and has been touted to have other benefits.
VanPoppelen owns a vegetable farm in Highland, as well operating a hemp farm in Bay County. Some of the CBD in the products sold at the shop come from his farm.
He’s gotten into the retail side because he believes in bringing clean products to the masses, be it fresh vegetables or CBD.
“It’s all medicine. The food is medicine, the cannabinoids are medicine,” he said. “It’s all about an approach to what we put in our bodies, making sure it’s clean.”
The shop sells a wide array of products, including CBD tincture, body scrubs and even CBD products for pets. They have partnered with a Chesterfield Township company, Cure Mich, to sell their signature line of products in store.
Schwartz got involved after discovering the substance helped her, and decided to get into the business with VanPoppelen.
“I’m a believer,” she said. “I’m a big believer.”
The shop has been in the works for about six months, with the two of them renovating it over a span of several weeks. The entire interior of the shop, which had been vacant for some time before Med Roots of Highland moved in, has been renovated to sell their line of product.
Highland Township is just the latest community to see more shops opening to sell CBD products after it became legal to do so in the past year. Shops have popped up across the region, selling the product in different formats. A CBD-only shop opened earlier this summer in Farmington, and a shop right across the street from Med Roots of Highland, Earth-N-Soul, opened earlier this summer selling some CBD products as well.
The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A website is coming soon, but those looking for more information on the business can connect with them on Facebook by searching for “Med Roots of Highland MI” or by calling the store at 248-714-8629.
