Inside Colorado senator’s hemp farm

MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)– Colorado Senator Don Coram has a new hobby and quite the green thumb.

Since the legalization of Marijuana in 2014, Coram says he’s helped pass several hemp bills to make growing the plant for medicinal CBD oil possible.

Now he’s decided to grow it himself.

He owns four different farms with nearly 50,000 hemp plants. His farm in Montrose has almost 20,000 plants alone.

He says so many residents have told him about the miracles CBD oil can do for children with seizures and autism, so he wanted to help grow the industry.

“You know right now Colorado has 22,000 acres permitted, this has a possibility of being a very, very good cash crop,ā€¯ said Senator Don Coram.

The hemp should grow to more than 6 feet tall and be ready for harvest in the fall.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture helps manage hemp farms across the state.
