Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD, is gaining in popularity as an infusion in everything from soda to jelly beans. And the list of CBD-infused products recently expanded to include everyone’s favorite summertime barbecue food — brats.

You can now order a CBD-infused bratwurst on the menu at the Milwaukee Brat House, a Wisconsin restaurant with locations in Milwaukee and Shorewood. The new brat offering is made using CBD oil and a house-made sweet condiment called Tiger Sauce to give the meat added flavor and — well, certain relaxation benefits. It’s topped with a pineapple habanero salsa and served on a fried pita. To order it by name, ask for The Pineapple Express.

The restaurant advertised its latest menu item in a Facebook post:

According to the chef responsible for serving up CBD in an unexpected way, this is a modern take on “comfort food.”

“This is what comfort food should be,” said Craig Mastalir, head chef at the Milwaukee Brat House, on the Facebook post. “It makes me feel good because of the local connection between all three companies, and gives me balance and energy because … ya know, the CBD.”

The restaurant is also infusing its signature beer mustard and sauerkraut with CBD. These items can be added to any menu item, in case you prefer a different main dish but still want those CBD benefits. The CBD oil is sourced from Beyond Organic Farms, a local business.

“Those are our initial offerings, and if people take kindly to it we may add more CBD infused items in the future,” Milwaukee Brat House event and promotions manager Drew Retherford told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

As Simplemost has previously reported, CBD differs from the psychoactive component of marijuana, THC, in that it won’t give you a “high” feeling. So, instead, it’s being explored in the wellness industry as a way to reduce anxiety and receive other health benefits.

Just imagine how much more laid back your backyard barbecues would be if everyone could enjoy CBD-infused bratwursts! But CBD-infused meats don’t seem to be widely accessible just yet, which likely has something to do with the fact that CBD is only beginning to be more commonly used in foods. Also, the use of CBD in food is not federally regulated. Laws surrounding it vary from state to state.

That being said, the Milwaukee establishment doesn’t seem to be the only place where you can access CBD-infused sausages. According to Willamette Week, the New Seasons Market in Portland carries Bacon Potato CBD IPA Pork Kielbasa Links made using Coalition Brewing’s CBD-infused Two Flowers IPA — which sounds downright delicious.

If you are interested in testing out the world of CBD food and beverage infusions, however, these hemp-infused sparkling waters that can be purchased online are a great place to start.

They’re available at $39.99 for an eight-pack:

From there, you can move on to trying coffee and candy. Those products come from the man behind the Jelly Belly brand, who’s making CBD-infused jelly beans, and Willie Nelson, who has created his own hemp-infused coffee. The world of CBD-infused digestibles keeps getting bigger!

With meats and more becoming available, CBD is certainly picking up steam as an ingredient in some of your favorite foods. Will you give it a try?
