CBD Treatment Case Nerve Damage in Fibromyalgia

As we continue to document the many extraordinary ways in which CBD can intervene in the treatment and therapy process for a diversity of difficult to treat health conditions for people in the world today, one common theme we have landed upon is that of chronic pain.

Fibromyalgia is a health condition that belongs to a class known as a neuropathy. Chronic pain and hypersensitivity to physical stimuli, along with an interesting psychological apprehension where pain sensation is concerned, are contained in the set of the variety of different ways in which fibromyalgia tends to manifest itself.

Understanding Fibromyalgia

The key to understanding fibromyalgia lies in the evolution of a process defined as a steady decrease in one’s threshold to tolerating pain. The pathogenesis for fibromyalgia includes a process by which, eventually, even the most basic and simple tasks characterizing everyday life become intolerable.

At this point, it is believed that 1 out of every 60 Americans are impacted by this terrible condition, with 90% of those cases being found among women above the age of 35. Theories abound as to the causality for this condition. Many different systems in the body come to be affected over time, including those impacting the muscular, skeletal, hormonal, and immune systems.

Because of its impact on these systems, regulatory functions become affected over time, resulting in hormonal imbalances, low blood pressure, and often insomnia.

This gets to the very root of how the nervous system works in terms of its ability to sense and report pain. This is exactly what makes this condition so difficult and unbearable. In healthy people, pain is an important resource that allows our bodies to understand things that could be damaging it. But when this system goes awry, the results can be unbearable.

As the disease progresses, for those affected, it often takes just half as much stimulus to cause a full pain response.

CBD and Fibromyalgia

While we don’t fully understand the mechanism by which fibromyalgia impacts the body in its characteristic manner, we do know that the regulatory systems impacted by this disease have also been shown to be highly integrated with the actions implied by the application of CBD. In other words, as we have seen in so many different cases, the receptors impacted by CBD are precisely those that have a say in how much suffering can be caused by fibromyalgia.

In addition, CBD has been shown to positively impact cases involving anxiety and depression, which are also common indications involved in a patient’s experience of fibromyalgia.

As should be clear, we have seen that CBD can be an effective agent in combating chronic pain, which also implies its role in the treatment for this terrible condition.

However, it would appear as though CBD can actually do more than just treat the symptoms. For example, CBD has been shown to effect a negative modulation of cannabinoid receptors, and an associated agonization of serotonin 5-HT1a receptors. This gets right to the heart of the specific way that CBD relieves symptoms of fibromyalgia.

We have seen a steady and relentless increase in the incidence of fibromyalgia over the last 100 years. This is also the period during which cannabinoids have become far less common in our everyday lives due to laws and social stigma associated with the cannabis plant. This is likely not a simple coincidence.

As we begin to take back our right to access to these valuable compounds, including CBD, we hope to see a general decline in the incidence of this terrible condition. In addition, new strategies are already coming into place that will harness this valuable asset in the battle ahead.
