NEEDHAM — Anna Schickel says before she tried CBD, an accumulation of back injuries resulted in multiple visits to physical therapists, orthopedists and chiropractors each week. A speech pathologist by trade, she said she often missed weeks of work at a time.
Prescription pain medications didn’t work – the side effects of depression and weight gain caused her to throw the pills in the trash after about six months.
“I just couldn’t get any relief, I kept going into back spasms,” Schickel said in a recent interview.
Finally, she found a solution during a visit home for Thanksgiving last year, after she decided to try an all-natural CBD product sold at a store her friend had recently opened in Ithaca, New York.
“It was really a turning point for me,” Schickel said. “Now I am back to running, doing yoga, hiking and skiing – all of the things that I used to do before.”
And now, CBD has also given Schickel a new career pursuit. On Saturday, she opened Your CBD Store at 1096 Great Plain Ave. A grand opening is set for Oct. 19.
“I have always toyed with the idea of starting my own business,” she said. “This seemed like a natural fit because the product has changed my life.”
Your CDB Store is a national chain. It boasts about 500 shops nationwide, including 12 in Massachusetts.
Recognizing there is a stigma around her industry, Schickel noted her store’s location will offer comfortable seating, an espresso machine and free CBD samples.
“We are just trying to create a comfortable space where people can come in and get educated,” Schickel said. “People can come in, pour themselves a cup of coffee, try it and just learn about it.”
CBD stands for Cannabidiol. It is the second-most prevalent ingredient found in marijuana. It is non-psychoactive and derived directly from the hemp plant. In a report published by the World Health Organization in 2017, the international organization found CBD “exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential,” and “to date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
Writing about the benefits of CBD for Harvard Medical School earlier this year, Dr. Peter Grinspoon said, “CBD has been touted for a variety of health issues.” The strongest scientific evidence points to CBD’s effectiveness in treating patients suffering from epilepsy, Grinspoon wrote, but it is also used as an option “for treating different types of chronic pain” and “commonly used to address anxiety.”
Updated federal law passed last year means hemp can be grown at scale by U.S. farmers, and products containing CBD are widely available in all 50 states. They can be found in grocery stores, online and at tobacco shops. You might even find it as an ingredient offered at your favorite smoothie stop, but Schickel says her store is different.
The Needham location will offer products produced by SunMed, a Florida-based company using a high-quality extraction process to produce its products which are all 100% organic and tested by an independent laboratory before being sold. On each product label, a QR code can be scanned using a smartphone before a copy of the laboratory report for that product appears.
“It’s a boutique store just for CBD,” she said. “There’s no chemicals or pesticides,” she said of her products. “It’s all organic – it’s just superior quality than what you are going to find at a vape shop or a grocery store.”
Shoppers visiting Your CBD Store in Needham will find oil-based tinctures, topical creams, water-soluble products and CBD pet treats ranging in price from $30 to $160.
The location is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., but on Sunday, it opens an hour later before closing at 5 p.m.
Customers must be 18 years old to purchase CBD products in Massachusetts.
