A cannabis store is coming to Columbia. But it’s probably not selling what you think.

The first store in Lexington County to exclusively sell retail products made from cannabidiol is set to open on Tuesday.

What to expect? All-natural pain relieving creams, anti-anxiety capsules and even solubles to make your dog stop crying during thunderstorms.

The CBD Store is the first in South Carolina for the Lyons family, which owns another location in Augusta, Ga. The plan always was to make it into South Carolina, owner Dylan Lyons said.

Some natural food markets and e-cigarette/vape stores offer CBD oil, but Lyons says the CBD Store experience will be completely different.

“You’re going to get a more hands-on experience in our stores,” he said.

Cannabis has become a hot topic in South Carolina as the first hemp harvest season in the state nears. Lyons is capitalizing on that interest to bust stigmas and offer people “an alternative” to prescription drugs and opioids.

Unlike other CBD oil retailers, this store won’t carry any other products. It’s all CBD, all the time.

CBD oil is a compound found in hemp and usually has low levels of THC, meaning it won’t get you high. The products sold at The CBD Store have no THC.

“We are offering the health without the high,” Lyons said.

When a customer walks in, he or she will be greeted by a CBD Store employee and guided through all the products, given a sample and educational materials if they don’t know much about CBD oil.

All products can be used to help with anxiety, chronic pain, depression and other ailments, store manager Jessica Rollins said.

How the products are administered will vary based on personal preferences, which is where staff steps in to help. While some customers might prefer oil to stir into their coffee, others may prefer a couple of drops under the tongue. Others may want a cream or a fruit-flavored gummy to relax them before bed.

Lyons says the CBD oil pain cream is the best seller at the Augusta location, “by far.” Often customers who go into the store “as a last resort” raved about how effective the treatment was in relieving arthritis pain and other kinds of inflammation.

The store also keeps results from a third-party lab that tests products for quality and purity, so customers can be sure they are getting the good stuff.

“We know every step of the process, all the way until it gets to the consumer,” Lyons said.

The industrial hemp is grown in Evergreen, Colo., turned into CBD products, tested in a lab, packaged in Bradenton, Fla., and shipped to the stores.

Because CBD oil is not FDA-approved, it is not tightly regulated, which opens the door for fake, diluted products to make it onto the market. Lyons said he and his team combat this by being transparent about the chain of custody of their products.

The Lyonses hope to expand into Columbia, Greenville and Charleston in the near future.

Where to go

The CBD Store will be located at 5084 Sunset Blvd., Suite A, in Lexington. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
